Senators Approve Bill That Deals With Emergency Custody Orders

The State Senate has approved new legislation that covers emergency custody orders for people with a mental health crisis. Local Senator Creigh Deeds (pictured) wants to let authorities detain someone for up to 24 hours. The Bath County Democrat says giving mental health professionals extra time to find a psychiatric bed will save lives. Deeds survived a November 19th knife attack by his 24-year-old son, the late Gus Deeds. The younger Deeds was allowed to go home after an emergency custody order expired. He took his own life after he attacked his father.
