Virginia Organizing Protest Rally In House Speaker District

There was no day of rest for a group that wants to expand Virginia’s Medicaid program. Joe Szakos (pictured) of Charlottesville-based Virginia Organizing spent part of Sunday holding a silent vigil near the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg. Szakos says his group had a makeshift coffin with a prediction that 1000 Virginians will die if the Medicaid rolls are not expanded. He says House Speaker Bill Howell represents the Fredericksburg area and some of the vigil participants are upset with Howell’s attitute towards the Medicaid program. Howell ruled last week that Governor McAuliffe could not veto a Medicaid-related provision in Virginia’s new budget.
